First Holy Communion

According to the Oxford dictionary, the word “communion” means the sharing or exchanging of intimate thoughts and feelings, especially on a mental or spiritual level. In a Holy Communion, it is believed that a person is united with Jesus Christ in special way.

During the last supper, Jesus took bread and wine and asked for his Father to bless them. He then broke the bread and gave the pieces to his disciples and said “This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me”.

He then took the cup of wine, shared it with his disciples and said “This wine is the token of God’s new covenant to save you – an agreement sealed with the blood I will pour out for you”.

When someone receives Holy Communion it is believed they are sharing in the body and blood of Jesus Christ. This event and the whole celebration is also called Eucharist (a Greek word meaning “thanksgiving”).
